Dual
Master's Degree Program in Transportation
Portland
State University currently offers a Master of Urban and Regional Planning
(MURP) degree program as well as a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental
Engineering (MSCE), both with transportation specializations. Students
may currently obtain a second master's degree using the Dual Degree
option.
QUESTION: Can I obtain both a Master
of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) and a Master of Science in Civil
Engineering (MSCE) focusing on transportation?
ANSWER: Yes, if you follow these
instructions:
1. Currently enrolled master's degree
students in good standing in either Urban and Regional Planning (MURP)
or Civil & Environmental Engineering (MSCE) can apply for a second
master's degree using the form GO-19M (http://www.gsr.pdx.edu/forms/go-19m.pdf).
One third of the credits in the "smaller" degree program,
in this case the MSCE program, can be used as overlap between the two
degrees.
Example:
Fill in all personal information; state your current degree (e.g. M.S.
in Civil Engineering). If you are a fully accepted graduate student
in your department write "regular" in the status line, otherwise
"conditional". Check the fourth box ("I wish to add to
my present master's degree a Dual Degree program"), followed by
the desired second degree (e.g. MSCE or MURP). Do not forget to complete
with signature, date and approval of your current department.
2. Each student is responsible for
submitting complete departmental admission requirements to the new department.
There are no winter admissions for the MURP program, and the admission
deadline is Jan 15.
For information about the admission procedure for the MURP program,
see http://www.pdx.edu/usp/admissions.html#murp
For information about the admission procedure for the MSCE program,
see http://www.ce.pdx.edu/Gradapp.shtml
3. Overlapping coursework may be
applied to both degrees, with the exception of the thesis. This combined
coursework is limited to a maximum of one third of the required credits
for the "smaller" degree (i.e. the degree with fewer required
credits). In this case, the MURP degree requires 78 credits (without
field area paper), and the MSCE degree requires either 45 credits (thesis
option) or 48 credits (project or coursework option). Thus either 15
credits (MSCE thesis option) or 16 credits (MSCE project/coursework
option) can be applied as combined coursework to both degrees.
4. The combined coursework must
be approved by the graduate committee chairs or department chairs of
both departments using the form "Memo for Acceptance of Credits
for Dual Degree Program" (http://www.gsr.pdx.edu/forms/dualdegree.pdf)
Example:
See recommended courselist for Dual
Master's Degree Program [TO BE UPDATED SOON].
5. The student must be formally
admitted to both programs no later than the term prior to the final
term of the first degree.
Example:
If you are scheduled to finish your final coursework (last course or
thesis) for your MSCE degree in Spring 2004, you have to achieve official
admission to both the MSCE and the MURP program during Winter 2003 at
the latest.
6. The student can graduate from
the two degrees in different terms. However, all courses must be completed
within the usual seven-year time limit for master degrees.
Example:
A class taken in Fall 2000 may be used in a degree program only if the
student graduates with that degree by the end of Fall term 2007.
7. Each student is limited to one
Dual Degree program.
